Really depends on if I have the JR pass or not. I usually spend more time on JR, especially the Shinkansen when I do, but otherwise I like non-JR private railways better, especially in mountainous areas outside of Tokyo. When I have the JR pass, I'm usually zig-zagging cross country all over the place.. Right when COVID started, I had a full trip planned with a 3-week JR pass to go from Kagoshima (after a couple days in my old stomping grounds in Okinawa) up to Hokkaido where I ultimately would have ended up in Sapporo for the remainder of my 6 week trip, but couldn't go for obvious reasons, went to Turkey and Croatia instead. I'm planning on recreating that trip next year some time.
