I was successful a couple of times. I believe I faxed or e-mailed the rate I found on Expedia as it happens on the appropriate form and they adjusted the rate. I did run into a situation like you describe once and was satisfied when they lowered the rate to what I could get elsewhere. Make sure you have all the restrictions (like king bed for example) off when you look for the lowest rate on the spg site.
