The agent assured me that in 15 days my Avios would be redeposited (almost 250,000) and that I would receive a credit for all fees. These miles/funds would be used to reschedule our flights once it is safe. To date, my Avios miles have not yet been re-deposited, and I have not received a refund or credit.
After over two months of trying, I spoke with an IBPlus agent and was told Iberia will not allow me to reschedule because the original flight was a codeshare with American Airlines. But American will not help because I used Avios to book the flight!
All help and insights appreciated!
Flights booked on AA metal with Iberia Plus Avios are non-refundable/non-changeable. (It doesn't matter whether those flights also happen to be offered as IB codeshares on cash bookings.) That has been the case for some time. Had you booked the same flights with BA Avios, you could have cancelled for a small fee and gotten a refund of your Avios. And had you booked the same flights with AAdvantage miles, you could have cancelled and gotten a complete refund free of charge -- and you would not have paid any carrier surcharges, either.
Live and learn, I'm afraid.
