When someone makes multiple reservations with intent of not suing them all, inventory is reduced and, more importantly, the next fare class may kick in for other buyers. I support UA cancelling conflicting reservations after a short wait period (say 12 hours). I think a wait period is reasonable to allow passengers to make sure a new reservation they might want takes hold before cancelling another one that would conflict.
