Name change is tough but DoB can be modified later by phone call. Not encouraging it but that's a workaround if you really need duplicate bookings on UA. IMHO, you are better off using two different airlines if you need a backup.
I believe the checks UA do are actually more wide ranging, something like just same FN/LN and concurrent flight times. So having a DoB "typo" would not avoid getting flagged, at least.
And in the era of mostly waived change fees, I guess they might get a lot more people trying to double-book.
