Shangri-La Vancouver

Hotel: Shangri-La Vancouver
Room: Booked Superior (cheapest category)
Early Check-in: Not needed; told hotel in advance.
Late Checkout: Also not needed; told hotel in advance.
Upgrade: Upgraded at check-in to Deluxe (+1 category), offered further paid upgrade to Executive Balcony King (+2). Not impressed by free upgrade so we ended up paying extra.
Breakfast Credit: Could be applied to Italian eggs in restaurant or via room service (see comments below).
Amenity: $100 property credit, used for minibar.
Comment: Last time here (pre-COVID) we were bumped from the cheapest room all the way up to a one-bedroom suite. No such luck this time — and to add insult to injury the paid upgrade appeared on our bill as "upsell". Also, anyone considering a stay here should know that the only on-site dining for this famous Asian hotel chain is now an Italian restaurant for some reason.

... So I've read the wiki, but feel like I could use some expert guidance on AMEX FHR. Prior to COVID my partner and I have had great success booking the cheapest available rooms and getting significant upgrades upon arrival; these days not so much. Is it really necessary to nag the hotel repeatedly as suggested by Prince of Travel?
