EuropCar South Africa - After Rental Damage Invoice
From Dec 2021 until Jan 2022, I rented a vehicle from EuropCar CPT Airport. On return, no receipt given no real inspection of car by me or the lone staffperson there. Just "leave keys on seat" and "have a nice trip" from the staffer. Didn't take photos of car.
Approx. 5 days later, get an email, "damage to hood of car" (a dent in the hood). They send photos of the damage. I tell them, in emails back and forth (a) have no idea how it happened and (b) I purchased damage waiver and minor damage cover. So, sorry. But, the waiver/cover should cover it. Hear nothing. Then, from different department at EuropCar SA get an email with an invoice for the damage repair. I reply again. I (a) have no idea how it happened and (b) I purchased damage waiver and minor damage cover. Sorry but, the waiver/cover should cover it. I consider the matter closed. Hear nothing back. Now, from a third department at EuropCar SA "Collections" saying "please contact about amount due on rental". I reply again, both (a) and (b) (referencing earlier correspondence) and again I consider the matter closed.
What to expect next? Anything else I should do?
Have rented 100s of cars over the years from all over the world from every major company (including EuropCar SA in the past). Never had this happen before. Once got a fee from a SA rental company (I think EuropCar, actually) b/c the car was returned dirty (as in a lot of dirt, not trash/papers/etc) but to be fair I had been driving a lot in Kruger National Park and, well, there's a lot of dirt there. But, that was noticed on the spot at return and I paid that - added to my return invoice (it was not paid in cash on the spot...).
Yes. I know I should have taken photos of car at end of rental. But, I was rushed and didn't. I usually do. But, this time didn't. I took photos at the start (no damage to that area) and noticed some extremely minor dings that were NOT referenced as damage after return. So, the damage either happened after return or during it. And, honestly, over a 3+ week rental and driving car all over CPT area, have no clue how it happened (if it did happen while I had the car).
