Yeah, there was never any way you were going to get $2,000, even with receipts, as I would imagine there is a fair amount of depreciation to consider. I'm not too sure a laptop in checked luggage was terribly clever, since most policies (including those of the airlines) exclude electronics. Try your travel insurance, hopefully they can bring you closer to your loss.
