I've always understood a 1 way to be fine, even if you intent to use it as a return.

Globaliser, vintagepilot and others have said, the FTV is really just a way of keeping all the "bits" together - vouchers used, taxes paid, avios spent etc. It's not committing you to spending the FTV on the same type of flight, it just tracks what you've spent. As noted tho, it does commit you to the same passengers.
