They called the hotel while I was on hold to make sure they did not unblock the suite so I could keep it as they were currently sold out. The only issue was that once you cancel a reservation you rebook at the current point requirement. So my 140,000 original 7 night at 20,000 points reservation became a 6 night at 23,000 points reservation at 138,000. Savings of only 2,000 points. Was not really worth dropping the 7th night.
was gonna mention this, that if the OP was looking to lock in todays pts needed then if the hotel goes up in Cat, most likely they would have to pay whatever the new amount per night is. The only way that might get around this is if the hotel agrees and rebooks you for the same amount of nights you booked, so eg you booked April 1-7 and say you meant May 1-7 the hotel may work with you, but once you want to cut it down to a 5 night stay then they probably will rework the amount of pts to what it cost when you call to change it
OP you could book 1 res for the # of nights you know you will stay and then gift the other nights to your SO and hope if you stay that the hotel will keep you in the suite but know they dont have to
