What they do is price the room in USD. Then they convert it into local currency at the HOTEL rate-- not at the official rate. And then try to convert it back to USD at checkout, again at an inflated rate.

That is pure theft. No different from switching a price tag.

I caught them on this twice. My argument to them was simple. Price in USD? OK, great. We convert it into MXN at the official rate and I pay you in MXN. Period.
Sorry this is off topic and I too have data point. This itself could be on its own separate thread to call out properties playing this game. Maybe this only happen in Peso regions.

Hyatt Ziva Cabo (2021) - Booked on Hyatt.com and the rate was in USD with full payment required 14 days before arrival. The rate was all in and come to find out they included the tax, so you don't earn the full points based on spent (.....that is another topic!).

Friend with no status was charged in full 14 days out at the correct USD amount. I think because Diamonds/Glob have a different cancellation policy, hotel didn't charge me. Then it was what BOS described above. I ended up over paying by $600 for 6 rooms.

I disputed the charge with my credit card and although they agree with me after seeing my confirmations and the supporting screen prints, they sided with hotel due to what I signed in their incorrect Peso calculation. My error for hearing "the charge was XXX USD per room per night" and not knowing they run it as MXP when I was joggling all the passports with room assignments during check in......If anyone has been to that region, their credit card print out is much smaller than what I am used to and in tiny font. I ended up writing my Concierge and asked for GP points using TPG's point value and this made up the principle.

At the end of the day, it is hotel's lost. Families want to go back, but this wound is not yet healed for me. Booking 5 rooms in Hawaii instead.
