I mean, I assume you've looked at a map you didn't specify flying or driving, but other major cities are going to be comparable distances to LAX (San Diego's not much further). There are some decent national/state park opportunities. Phoenix/Sedona, Flagstaff might have interesting possibilities depending what you're into.
