As agent indicated, the only way to accomplish this is by splitting the reservation. It's an artifact of Delta making Comfort+ a separate fare/inventory class. You can split res and request that they link reservations. It's just a notation, but can provide some benefit in the case of schedule changes and IRROPs. They might also be willing to put other pax in preferred seating (although there is no guarantee it will stick if there are flight changes).
