I've checked in my iMac without problem on BA. Like others had saved the original box together with the styrofoam inserts and it arrived without problem. I would also recommend bringing the original invoice with you in case of an issue with customs. During the security crackdown I also had to check in my laptop and expensive camera gear. Again, properly packaged I had no problem and enjoyed not having to schepp heavy stuff through the airport.
