You never can tell...

A few years back, I had a 1-day award rental at DEN. Rented and returned, no one outside to check it in, so I just got on the bus and left. Three days later, I get the "where's our car?" phone call. I suggested they look around their lot in Denver for it. Thankfully, they called back a half-hour later saying they'd found it.

The contract is most likely being voided by some people over there, but reasons still unknown until you can provide more details
Only one reservation that day, and that's the one I picked up and returned. Reserved a convertible, and picked up the convertible in the exact numbered spot they assigned to me. Dropped it off in the active drop off lanes.

These are good questions, as there are all sorts of potential points of failure where their system could get confused. But in this case, it was a completely straightforward rental.

As suggested, I'm not going to worry about it. I did my due diligence, and have all my paperwork... except for the final receipt since they never gave me one.
