I called Hertz, told them what happened, and asked for help in processing my payment and sending me a receipt. She asked for my reservation number, and when I gave it to her she pulled it up right away. She then asked if I happened to have my rental agreement number. Since I held onto my agreement and the pre-existing damage form, I went ahead and gave her the number. She also asked me if I rented the car in the USA or overseas - I told her I rented it at the DFW airport location.
She put me on hold a while, and when she came back, she said "well, basically you got a free rental because there is no record of your actual rental in our system, only the reservation." I asked "so, you mean the rental is closed and there is nothing further to do with it?" She said "no, I mean the rental agreement number pulls up nothing in our system. Your reservation exists, but not the rental agreement. So, if you haven't been charged, it's a free rental."
I'm skeptical that Hertz won't come back later and do something crazy - they haven't exactly built trust recently. Now I have to decide if I should worry about it, or just let it go.
Did you keep more than 1 reservations for that day and canceled one on arrival? What class did you reserve and where did you find your car? Did they assign you something and you picked something else? Was it in the active drop off lanes or some packed up dropped off area?
The contract is most likely being voided by some people over there, but reasons still unknown until you can provide more details
