Am I Crazy Buying Marriott Points?
Saw the offer come up for the 50% bonus (meaning, at the top end, you can pick up 100k points + 50k bonus for $1250).
I'm currently sitting on c60k Bonvoy points and 40k MR points (that convert to 60k Bonvoy). I was originally planning a stay at the Reges Cesme Luxury Collection (which prices at 120k points for 5 nights with the 5th night free). That would have been a free stay. With the new opportunity to buy these points, I can get enough (280k) to redeem at the EDITION Bodrum for the same dates.
This works out to be an incremental $250 ($1250 for the extra points divide 5) a night to "upgrade" the hotel. Based on cash rates, Reges Cesme seems to sell for ~$750 in peak summer vs ~$1600 per night at the EDITION.
So, on the surface, it's getting $850 a day in extra value for $250 of extra cost to me. But in terms of point efficiency, Reges gets 750*5/120k*100=$3.125 per point vs 1600*5/280k=$2.86 per point at the EDITION, so the former redemption seems to be a bit more efficent.
What would you pick? Usually, I'd think it's stupid buying points due to their illiquidity/ space for devaluation but in this case it seems reasonable I think. Have I gone crazy or can this be rationalised as a good deal?
(Also PS - has anyone tried both of the hotels and know how much better the EDITION is? Is the $850 delta justified?)
Thanks so much !
