Electric vehicle: missing charging cable

I took out a 2022 Kia Niro EV with a full tank of electricity. I drove about 70 miles and never even opened the trunk once. When I got back to the airport, the clerk opened the trunk and asked me what I had done with the charging cable. I said I had never even opened the trunk. He then wrote “missing cable” in pen on the windshield.

Am I on the hook for this? Should I be checking every EV for a cable before I leave the gate? What about the SD card for navigation? These are things that tend to “go missing.” I don’t see how it would be my fault.
