Would have liked to have checked my bag through so that i can do some touristy bits in DC and not be tied down with luggage. Not sure if I could with separate tickets (I suppose I could go back to the desks to do it and then reclear security if need be).
You cannot check bags through on separate tickets, and the time you'll need to collect and recheck will cut into what's already likely a fairly slim time to go sightseeing.
