No matter how you have put together this itinerary, you need to clear immigration and customs formalities at your first port of entry to the US. On separate tickets you have the slightly more involved routine of going to the airside check in desk, whereas on a single ticket you deal with that at the recheck desk just outside baggage claim. There is no way flor you not to deal with your luggage at LAX.
