Pre-pandemic, you could indeed get a visa to enter Japan for an overnight stay due to the connection. Right now there is an in principle denial of landing for all foreigners.
The current restrictions are in place through the end of Feb. I can wait a week or so to see what if any changes are announced starting in March. Boy and I would love to spend a Saturday night in Tokyo. We both have US passports and I figured I’d treat him to a nice vacation to celebrate his 11th grade spring break.
