I don't know what to tell you. I don't think the GW is glam/gaudy, I think it's pretty. Honestly, I didn't care for Aulani in the short visit we had, I thought it was very "brown", and one part (I think the top of a slide?) reminded us of Big Thunder Mountain (which I love as a ride). So everyone has different likes and tastes. There are plenty of pictures on line. Your kids won't care, so choose a place you think will make you and your husband happy.
