I travel a lot from New Haven and get off at 125th all hours and walk to the IRT 4/5/6 instead of going down to GCT as I find it's faster even with the walk.
If your final destination is GCT, how can that be? The Metro North schedule time from 125th Street to GCT is 13 minutes. The NYCTA schedule time on the #4 or #5 train from 125th Street to GCT is also 13 minutes. Unless MNR regularly is delayed between 125th and GCT, it would seem that staying on the train would be faster.
