If it's a 9am start, then you definitely want to take the train, which is reasonably easy even for those taking the kitchen sink. But the best thing to do for that sort of departure time is to stay over in the Hilton, Hampton, Courtyard, Premier Inn or Sofitel (reopens 1 March) since you thereby turn an early morning frazzle into a fairly leisurely check-in process. Room rates should be reasonable.
Thanks C-W-S as always. Yes I think you're probably right, the hotel option would probably be best if I have to go by train. I'm looking at Bloc which is actually in South Terminal and it's under £100. I just prefer sleeping in my own bed before a long journey but the trade off as you said is to save a lot of potential problems with trains and traffic jams on the day.
