Thanks to all the advice. I called Delta and was faced with a 2 hour hold time. I called back and had them send me a text to use the text message / chat feature. I got my eCredit / flight cancellation in about 20 minutes. My only complaint was that the agent couldn't confirm the $ amount of the credit before issuing it. I was staring at Delta.com and just wanted to know the right amount. It turned out I was absolutely right on the $ amount. Other than that, it was a good experience. I filled out the survey (via text message) and I was done. I confirmed that the eCredit is showing up in my account.
Now I can book that RDU-FCO trip for me and my partner. Maybe on ITA?
