I was able to cancel my NYT subscription via chat. It was a while ago, so I don't remember how long it took for an agent to engage the chat, but I don't think it was that bad. Plus, you can browse FT on a different window while you wait!

I sent them a message on facebook and they told me to email
[email protected] and they cancelled and sent me an email not that long after this morning.
