You are right I'm just a traveller from Canada...and haven't been to NYC for almost 10 years! My last trip covered somewhere near Columbia (west Harlem if I'm correct) and I felt no problem there with some other female companions. But I have completely no idea of east Harlem, plus solo this time.
And thanks for the cab info. I have only a backpack so haven't considered a cab or uber...thought public transit would be fine. But will definitely check it out.
Is this trip on a weekday, or on a weekend? I would expect more people to be on the street at 7 am on a weekday than on the weekend.

While no one can guarantee your safety regardless of the route you take, if you have any trepidation at all about transferring on 125th Street, you can -- as you know -- stay on the train to Grand Central, transfer to a Queens-bound #7 subway for the 20-minute ride to 74th Street/Jackson Heights station, and then board the Q70 SBS bus for the short ride to LGA. Going via GCT would probably add 30-45 minutes to your journey to LGA.

Regardless of the route you opt for, are you familiar with how SBS bus service works? Specifically, how one pays the fare?

If you plan future visits to New Haven, you might also consider flying in and out of Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, CT. Amtrak can get you from New Haven to Hartford and Windsor Locks stations; from each there is bus service to BDL. The bus service from Windsor Locks station is timed to coincide with Amtrak arrivals from New Haven.

Good luck!
