It's totally fine on 125th st, especially around the station. There's always lots of police, and at 7am you are beginning to get the commuter traffic so there will be lots of people around. The M60-SBS is literally one block over from the station so it's not like you have to trek through some sketchy areas to get to the bus. I used to live in the UES and would get off at 125th St since it was much closer than going to GC and heading back up town. I supposed I'd avoid it super late at night, but that would be about it.

To be honest, I would probably just hop in a cab at the 125th st. station for the convenience factor and since it's a flat rate. It may save you quite a bit of time over the bus. You can check out Uber too, but their prices have been beyond absurd for a while now.

You are right I'm just a traveller from Canada...and haven't been to NYC for almost 10 years! My last trip covered somewhere near Columbia (west Harlem if I'm correct) and I felt no problem there with some other female companions. But I have completely no idea of east Harlem, plus solo this time.
And thanks for the cab info. I have only a backpack so haven't considered a cab or uber...thought public transit would be fine. But will definitely check it out.
