Seems I can take a personal item (second bag) as well but the opposite is true there - AA have a better allowance than BA. I actually wouldn't need this second bag if I could take my BA sized bag through. But it gives me options I guess since I'll have a laptop that I definitely don't want to be checked in.

I don't have any status unfortunately guv1976. I don't fly often enough.
The price would be the same as checking at the ticket counter, whatever that would be. Seems like if it's marketed by AA and this is your only bag, it would be $75 for basic economy or $0 for any other class. If it's marketed by BA maybe their fee table would apply, I'm not sure.
