Look at the operations of LGW, SAN, etc and the amount of traffic they can move being one-runway airports.
The runway needed more extensive repairs sooner than expected after opening the additional gates. Some of the work was deemed emergency repairs. Additional gates as suggested would cause more issues with the runways. Love Field has 2 runways with 1 being shutdown for months. Additional gates would cause delays according to the city aviation representatives if additional gates are added.
