Amex savings recently increased their interest rate from 0.4% to 0.5%. Given the increased flexibility of checking over a savings account, your point is still valid.
United States Treasury Direct (the Federal government) sells inflation-indexed series I bonds that pay current interest rate of 7.1%. Not a savings account, and there is a minimum period before you can cash in your money and interest, but still a great and safe option for long-term savers.
