I was NOT a passenger and it was just them on the PNR and it allowed me to select preferred seats at no charge. I then completed the transaction for them and then booked my cash ticket on a separate PNR. No fraud, No drama.
What fare family did you book the Aeroplan tickets into? Comfort and latitude allow free preferred seats for anybody.
Honestly though as an E50k, when I book revenue tickets in flex for me and my partner it's hit and miss. Sometimes the systems lets me select a free preferred seat for him and sometimes it wants me to pay.
