As others have said to protect the 241 you need to make a booking and then cancel it to keep it alive for the next 18 months or so. You can book a short haul one way to use the lowest cash and Avios amounts - it does not need to be a return, I booked JER to LHR one way in economy to extend my 241 last year and then later used it as a LHR-LAS return in business, I just paid the extra cash/avios.
Be aware that once you have booked and then cancelled for a FTV the cash/avios are held within the FTV and not returned to you. You will have to call in to reuse the FTV in the future and the same two people need to travel in the future once you choose to reactive the 241 booking.
