For drive thrus, I prefer that the cashier handles the card. During most of 2020 and 2021, the common case was that the cashier would meet me halfway with the payment terminal. I found it always awkward. The only place that does this currently around here is Chick-fil-A, but they take orders and payment from roaming employees in the drive thru lanes in advance of getting to the counter. The terminals do support contactless payments.
I think it was more awkward than it could have been because of our insistence on using terminals like the MX915. Some places have switched to smaller devices, though, which helped.
That said, given that PIN isn't really a thing here, I'm not sure it's
that bad to have the cashier run physical cards in the drive thru. Not ideal, of course, but it's probably not harmful either. Especially once the magstripe finally goes away later this decade.

Tapping a card becomes much less hassle.
Fair enough. Hopefully the latest update will improve things for those wearing masks. Or maybe they'll finally adopt underscreen fingerprint readers?
