Even when you call that number, unless you get deep down into the IVR menu tree, at every stage the system tries its best to divert your call to your elite reservations desk, and then you have to ask to be transferred to AAdvCS. At least that used to be the case; I haven't had to try in a couple of years.

I've used it only once recently (unsolicited) and got a response within 2 days. Dunno if it's status-dependent but shouldn't be.
