You remember better than a lot of the people here. Samsung was quite late to the game. Palm were big and gave it a good shot, but were just too late with the Palm Pre - exactly what they needed, but ~18 months too late to capture and dominate. Sony & Toshiba were a strong early global players outside the US, and Motorola was simply big everywhere. HTC was a global leader for a few years there around the start, especially given they were making phones for almost everyone else as well as their own line.
