That's interesting. When I don't get the concierge level, my one card is usually "keyed" so it will get me in. On the few occasions when it didn't, I went back down to the front desk and they "re-keyed" it so it would. I am only speaking of domestic USA Marriotts, overseas they may do it the way pinniped described as a matter of course.
Either way is fine, of course. Just so you get the lounge access!
Maybe I should ask for that next time... They've always given me 1 card for my room (usually white) + a second card for the lounge (usually snazzier-looking Gold). Of course, when I'm on the Concierge Level, I just get the 1 snazzy Gold keycard.
