I think we can all agree that it would be better if the Thompson provided in-room coffee as an option - after all, more options means more opportunity to satisfy each guest's unique needs. For some, this would be a dealbreaker. For others (I am in this bucket), they could not care less about an in-room coffee maker.
Although I don't agree with their anger and their constant focus on destination fees (the lack of in-room coffee maker would obviously be an issue for some with or without a destination fee), I think ORDnHKG is doing what everyone should do - research options and find out if there are any dealbreakers that could sour a potential trip.
On the destination fee point, I find that many of the Hyatt and Marriott properties I stay at have (I'm looking as a whole - not just in Chicago) destination fees. I am not pro-destination fee, but I recognize that some good properties do charge these. At Marriott, I have no way to get out of them. At Hyatt, I get out of them by being a Globalist - just another incentive to push me towards re-qualifying. It's great that you haven't experienced destination fees at Hilton, but for my personal travel needs, Hilton has a deficit in important things that I care about (late checkout and breakfast), just as other chains have a deficit in things that you care about (not charging destination fees).
