How do I find the real reason for a flight cancellation?

I was due to be on UA590 BWI/ORD this afternoon, only for it to be cancelled at a couple of hours notice. I assumed it was to do with the incoming storm, but I was easily able to rebook on to a later DCA/ORD flight, so there was no problem with planes heading to Chicago. I ended up being rebooked on to a flight which was cheaper than my original ticket. I also incurred some expenses getting to DCA (the alternative would have been an overnight at BWI and the prospect of far worse weather around ORD tomorrow).

I'm keen to raise this with United - but I would love to know the real cited reason for the cancellation. I've noticed on some other airline forums, some folk are able to look this kind of info up on a log where the airline has to record an official reason for the flight delay. Can anyone either point me to this or find out the reason for this flight going down?
