When we've been on a late evening flight we have always paid for an additional day because we didn't want to have it hanging over our heads that we had to check out by a certain time, which is always much earlier than the flight - even with a late check out.

If we have a late afternoon flight we take the chance at a late checkout and use the hospitality room.

We haven't been sorry to "waste" the money for the night. It allowed us to fully enjoy the extra day in Hawaii the airlines have provided .
