Just looking at flights in the nearby vicinity timing-wise, neither SFO nor LAX are flying anything smaller than an E175 into PHX, which to me is as acceptable as a mainline bird. I would definitely take the long hop on LX to the West Coast, with a slight preference for transiting at SFO (my vague recollection is that getting from G to E/F at SFO isn't as onerous as TBIT over to T7 at LAX).
