Hi John - I see this is your first post - Welcome to Flyertalk.
The official answer to your question depends on what fare type the 14 yr old is booked on.
If it happens to be Business Select, or Anytime, they can standby for the earlier flight easily - those fares include same-day changes and/or same-day standby benefit.
If the fare type is Wanna Get Away, those benefits are not included. They will be allowed to standby, however they will have to pay the difference between the fare they paid and the Anytime Fare if they are cleared (If not cleared they stay on original flight at original fare).
If there are seats available currently, you could make a confirmed change to the Anytime Fare, and then standby wouldn't be involved.
As AllThePants points out if they happen to be A-List or A-List Preferred they will have the same day standby benefit regardless of which fare they are traveling on.
