Just did the exact same thing for a family member and the AA confirmation email had both the AA PNR and the BA PNR. AA referred me to BA to book the seats. I entered the BA PNR and it was easy to proceed from there. I have frequently found much better fares on AA.com versus the BA site for the exact same flights. The fees to reserve the seats are the same no matter who you book the flights through.
