We told him we already preordered and he replied with something about their phones not working right since they just got off a flight from Guatemala.

I would cut FAs slack.
My experience preordering is 0% noticing. However, it gets deployed somewhat haphazardly, so they probably don't know whether to go digging in the phone beforehand or only when someone says something.
