Baggage assignments on BA are based on seated cabin (not by status) and it is indeed managed through the barcode. For longhaul flights at Heathrow, premium and non-premium are often loaded on separate laterals, and in this case there is no chance they’ll be cross-loaded. The tags have for a long time only been used to make people feel better about themselves.
