Probably doesn't help you if you're looking for an earlier flight, but if you happen to "accidentally miss" your flight (say due to a "flat tire") then the airport agent could have some latitude to list you on standby (or even confirm you) for a later flight with a connection. Works even better if you're able to arrive within 15 minutes of your original flight's departure time. Definitely some risk however. YMMV.
