Update: I think I may have figured it out. I can't use a flight credit for an international flight originating from outside the US despite that being the flight canceled for which I was issued a flight credit?
I had a similar issue with a flight credit that I was given as a voucher at the airport, only to be told by customer service that I would need to do it online, but the website would not take it. I took about ten minutes to file a small claims matter. American Airlines executive offices called me, I told them what I needed done, they sent me a new flight credit that could be used online.

Not sure if that is a route you want to go, but if so, it's pretty straight forward and easy to do a small claims matter here in the U.S. and it'll get accomplished.
