That would be a more plausible conspiracy theory if it weren't for the fact that this phenomenon only appears "nearer departure", ie when "theoretical seating" kicks in, and is only shown to the minority who are curious enough to look at EF during the short period between then and OLCI opening. Most people who have chosen not to pay for seat pre-allocations will next look at seating when OLCI opens.

I guess I should have considered paying for my seat but I had a very slim hope that a 777 with the new club suites might be used at the last minute so any seat would have be fine for me..
I'm currently nervously waiting for my PCR test. Fingers crossed I am finally going to get to Cape Town after 3 previous attempts .
Ultimately (assuming PCR test is negative) there will be a seat on the plane for me and I am getting to travel so all is good
