I then made another dummy cash booking, single flight, NYC to LON, in business.
$3,379.80 (of which fare $2,650.00, i.e. charges are $729)
Difference in charges is 440 USD = 327.14 GBP
Does this sound about right? Correct procedure to estimate fees and taxes?
Doesn't matter that my actual booking will be upgrading one leg of a flight?
Can this usually be upgraded online?
Worried about online option not working and no one able to do it over the phone.
No, you need to price up a return booking with WT out and WTP back, and then a return booking with WT out and CW back - then compare the difference in taxes/fees/charges between those two.
You can book the underlying cash fare online then go in to MMB and upgrade with avios.
