There is a same segment available for which the SFO - ATL flight leaves later in the day but its on a 757 but its $100 dollars cheaper. Currently on the SFO - ATL flight there are 11 flights in the D1 seat that are available.
Question: If I change the flight to the later SFO - ATL segment now and get $100 ecredit but request SDC 24 hours before to the SFO - ATL flight that has a D1 seat, since I originally booked in F and if seats are available/people have been upgraded, I would assume that I would take priority over the people who were upgraded to F correct?
If you have a paid first class ticket on the later nonstop flight, you can SDC to the earlier nonstop flight (as of 24 hours before the flight you are booked on) and if there is any F seat available for sale on that earlier flight you will be confirmed directly into that F seat. So yes in a sense you would "take priority" over those on the upgrade list, but really you wouldn't ever be on the upgrade list or otherwise waitlisted at all.
The only risk here is if the 763 flight sells out in F before you become SDC eligible, which is certainly possible given Delta is aggressive about selling first class seats (and people on earlier SFO-ATL flights that day, if there are any, could also SDC onto the 763 flight 24 hours before their original departures, so could possibly grab available seats before you become eligible for SDC). But you're not competing with anyone on the upgrade list unless you try to SDC right before the departure time of your targeted flight.
